Overweight flyer not welcome on EasyJet

Monday, August 31, 2009

By MSN NZ staff

It's often Ryanair getting media attention with its outrageous stunts, but this time European budget air carrier EasyJet has made headlines after check-in staff refused to let a woman fly because she was "too fat".

Anna Delluci, 55, was told to buy a second ticket for a flight from Bari to Rome after check-in staff asked her to stand on scales in front of other passengers, Italian newspaper La Repubblica reports.

"I'm sorry, but you're too fat and if you want to fly with us, you have to buy two tickets," an attendant reportedly told Delluci.

Delluci, who weighs 98kg, is now suing the airline for the humiliation she suffered.

This comes in light of recent news that Irish airline Ryanair is considering a "fat tax" for overweight passengers.

Do airlines have the right to refuse passengers who are overweight? Have your say below.

Haha 82 skinny people commented - Just cause I buy two seats doesn't mean I won't lean on you - and can we get the air conditioning turned down or I'll sweat on you two - if you don't like it tough. You can always get the bus!!
Maybe the airlines could simply make some bigger seats for everyone? And have a few smaller seats available for smaller people. I realise that for using up carbon perhaps it is better for the environment to squash a lot of people onto the plane.. but maybe the seats could just be made slightly bigger with a bit of space between each seat. It is expensive enough to fly. Fatness doesn't necessarily reflect having heaps of money. It could just mean that the person doesn't get much exercise but eats a fairly normal amount of food.
Seems I cant post any thought provoking comments. Hmmmmm Is this Moderated to ensure that you get the view they want you to have?
Hi, Can't really disagree with both sides of the argument here. However I think that airlines need to offer a better service. People who fly have many varied needs that all differ so why do airlines not take this into account. They should be concious of trying to make the flying experience good for every passenger. Why not offer options and charge accoringly. People have small children (kids find flying difficult) annoy other passengers with crying. Why can't there be a disognated area (preferably at the rear of the airline) for this customer and offer solutions for their special needs. Taller people have different needs. Larger people have needs. Design certain allocated seating for these people and charge additional accordingly. I'm sure these people would be happy to pay additonal fee (within reason) for their own comfort. How come currently I can buy the cheepest fare while someone pays full fare and I can still reserve online whatever seat in economy I wish???? Insane.
For the fat people who are insulted by this GET OVER IT! Its not a personal attack, all it is saying is that if your taking up more than one seat then you should pay for more than one. I dont think that doing a fat tax or whatever is discriminating at all. It's just being realistic. Why should the people who CAN fit into one seat suffer. Regardless of if its a medical condition or not, you should pay extra
Each passenger should be assigned an overall weight allowance, including them and their luggage, and if they exceed that limit they have to pay. I weigh 55kg. If I take a few kilos of extra luggage I have to pay extra, even though I and my luggage combined weigh less than one large person. And sure, if you're too fat to fit in your seat you should pay for two seats instead of making other passengers suffer - small people don't enjoy being squashed any more than a large person does, and we have rights too.
i have the unfortunate tale of being the "huge" guy travelling all the time, its not my fault im 6 foot 5 and weight 125 kilos, the weight comes with the height, however, paying for 2 seats is a bit unfair on us larger people, why dont they just sit us next to children when possible??? they have extra space and we need it, id pay an extra $50-$100 so i get space aswell, im sure other people with "excess luggage" would agree, if not, get a perm...
Yes, those too big for 1 seat should pay for 2!. Taking over 50 flights in the last year I have been unfortunate a few times to have been seated beside very large people losing half of my seat & i'm not exactly little weighing over 100 kgs myself. However, I don't think it should be based on weight as such, but more on size. Why don't they have a demo seat at check in like they do in the theme parks in Oz. for those in doubt. If all of you fits into the seat without over spill then it's 1 ticket and if you are obstructing your neighbour's comfort then it's 2 tickets. As said above people carry weight differently and some who look big weigh less and some who look small weigh more. Yes it's hurtful for overweight people to be put on the spot like that, I surely would be humilated if it was me. But, reality is why should someone else have to suffer because you are squashing them and some large people tend to smell. Perhaps an incentive to loose weight if you think you might need 2 seats?
Ok having listened to the comments i dont see a problem, I know that others have size problems be it fat or bulk etc. The reality is that most of us fit in a certian size and why the seats are that size. If you are over sized you pay more its simple. Just like parcels and freight ist costs to transport these anywhere and more on its size. They should have a limit and state it on all airlines and yes if you are tiny and an adult then you get kids fairs. They should have a larger section of seats for just over sized and those cost more rather than two whole seats, Just like alot of others that have long legs that either buy better seats or they get front seats. The way the airline handled it was wrong that was for sure as to emabarrase a customer is not good. Its all up to the airlines but i cant see why others have to suffer a service of small seats and large people as then the smaller person suffers for no reason.
I agree with the paying for 2 seats if yes they are noticibley over weight. But i weigh 90kg and thats only 8 kg less then this women and im sorry but i am not that large that i take up two seats or even hang over the seat i fly alot and i have never been over my own space ever and i always make sure of that so?? Where do you draw the weight line? What is fat and what is not? i know women that weigh more and look skinner i know women that weigh less and look bigger, its just another excuse to make a quick buck
