At a time when interest rates are rising and petrol prices sky-rocketing, taking off on a holiday might seem like a pipe dream. But from travelling during the off-season to cooking your own meals, there are a number of ways you can save on holiday costs.
Plan ahead
Start planning for your holiday now. Discounted packages for travel over the Christmas summer holiday period are offered as early as August and ski resorts start posting deals for the upcoming winter season from February. You can also get great deals on cruises if you book a year in advance.
Travel during the off-season
Don't travel during the high season. Travelling around New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific islands is most expensive in summer. At the same time, it's winter in the northern hemisphere and with tour operators and hotels slashing their rates, it's the perfect time for that European jaunt.
Shop around for the lowest fare
Search online for the best deals on flights and accommodation. Once you find the lowest fare, and before you book, compare prices with the airline's own website and call your local travel agent to see if they'll beat it.
Purchase a package holiday
While there's a lot to be said for spontaneity when travelling, if you buy a holiday package including airfare, accommodation and car rental, you can save up to 30 percent compared to purchasing each part of your trip separately.
Book adventure tours in-country
When it comes to adventure sports and tours, such as canyoning, diving and trekking, local tour operators usually offer the best deals. So book your adventures once you've arrived at your destination, not before you leave.
Self-cater
Eating out can be expensive. A great way to cut costs and to taste the flavour of a country is to shop at a local market and cook your own meals. If your hotel doesn't allow self-catering, simply head to a park or scenic lookout and dine al fresco.
Rent a villa
If you plan on staying somewhere for more than two nights, rent an apartment or villa instead of staying in a hotel. You'll not only save money, you'll also enjoy the comforts of home while experiencing life as a local.
Purchase a multiple attraction pass
Most major cities offer multiple attraction passes. These cards offer admission to a number of the city's major attractions for one low price. Some even offer discounts at local restaurants and shops.
Use a prepaid phone
Roaming charges for mobile phones can be astronomical, so rent or purchase a prepaid mobile phone before you take off. Simply buy a local SIM card once you arrive and top it up as you go.
Claim your VAT reimbursement
Many countries have a value-added tax, which is meant only for residents. To get this money back, save your receipts and make your claim at the VAT Refund Office at the airport before you depart.
