Passengers flat out on skycouch

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

By MSN NZ Travel staff

Fancy cuddling up to your partner in cattle class?

You’ll soon be able to with Air New Zealand's seating redesign.

‘Skycouch’ is set to be rolled out on their Boeing 777-300s.

It allows the passenger to lie completely flat, or for a couple to curl up for a cuddle.

But it won’t come cheap — the price is based on travellers buying two economy tickets and paying an additional 50 percent of the cost of a third seat.

Each plane will have 22 sets of skycouch seats.

The new seats will be available on all Air NZ's long haul services from mid-2012.

Meanwhile, tickets for December flights between Auckland and Los Angeles go on sale in April.

Chief executive Rob Fyfe said it was set to revolutionise economy class.

"For those who choose, the days of sitting in economy and yearning to lie down and sleep are gone," he said.

"The dream is now a reality, one that you can even share with a travelling companion — just keep your clothes on thanks."

Air NZ is also set to launch a premium economy 'spaceseat'.

"We’ve even created a new foot bean bag style cushion affectionately called otto. It enables premium economy passengers to create their own position for sleeping rather than being restrained by an uncomfortable, stiff leg rest," Air NZ group general manager international airline Ed Sims said.

A new interior design scheme includes a move away from traditional blues and greens to a more luxurious blend of chalk and deep ink colours.

Mr Fyfe said the carrier’s food and beverage services and entertainment systems would also be upgraded — food will be cooked mid-flight, not reheated.

“Being able to order a steak, medium rare in business premier, a pizza for two in premium economy or a late night snack in economy, whenever you want, will be a very cool experience,” he said.

Standard economy seats will get a makeover — they’ll be fitted with a larger video screen and a cushion that attaches to the headrest.

The cost:
Return flights for two adults from Auckland to Los Angeles:
Economy: $4244 (tax added)
Cuddle class: *$5250
Premium economy: $6844
Business class: $18,644

Return flights for two adults from Auckland to London:
Economy: $5830.20 (tax added)
Cuddle class: *$6250
Premium economy: $10,028.40
Business class: $21,493.80

What do you think of Air NZ's upgrades? Would you fly cuddle class?

I like the idea of cuddle class..But really all I want when travelling long distances is A FOOT STOOL of some kind PLEASE!!...! PRETTY PLEASE.!!!. .What part of needing a foot stool DOESN'T AIR NEW ZEALAND UNDERSTAND???? Something that can fold up under seat in front and bring down when needed all the long haul trips we do I find it totally appalling they don't have foot stools..I think they use too but they've taken off somewhere since then... I luv flying our proud bird of the sky....as soon as I step on board I"M HOME IN OUR PARADISE NEW ZEALAND..... just do the footstool thingieeee Air New Zealand and I'll be singing your praises.....YAHHHHHHHH !!
LOVE IT GREAT IDEA!! I WILL DEF USE THIS WILL BE WORTH THE COST!! THANKYOU!
It actually really doesnt look that comfortable!!!! What a rip!!
I think the cuddle class is a good idea. (Will not mention price however..) My only issue is - when i was 12 my sister and flew from Amsterdam to NZ, and we did this exact thing. One of us streached out on the seats and one on the floor.. The problem was that at 12 I was already too long for 3 seats. I am not an overly tall person either.. Is there REALLY room for 2 adults to lay down side by side, and not get their feet knocked off by the food and drinks trolley?????????.....
Well this is fantastic ! But I need to say is well that the tickets already are Spensev...,why not make for one a really comfortable travel for everybody and stop have "brilliants ideas just for get more money from us?And with a generosity idea Air NZ WILL BE THE BEST IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!
History has shown that airlines are very good at bringing these great ideas in but at what cost to the space of other travellers- Are we going to be pushed closed together in economy to make extra space for these new cuddle seats!!
Hi - you are almost there. - What you need to do, is arrange the seating so that on long hauls, each individual's seat lies down at an angle that respects the passangers behind them and create a so called foot rest for ones feet, thus creating a bed (although not dead flat) but suitable and comfortable, to enable each individual to sleep in comfort. Now lift up the arm rest and then a couple could cuddle up and have a good nights sleep. Result - no need to purchase a extra seat and indivduals can have have the same sleep as as a couple. ( short of lifting arm rest and sharing with someone you don't know - same sex or not). Look to the future, if air travel time cannot be be cut in half, then do as above, allowing all that travel by air, and there will be more in the future, to have some comfort at what is called cattle class travel. Thing about it - It can be done. Air travel is about about moving people from -A to B in comfort.
ooh do you have to have your own cuddle person or is it a lucky dip
Whooo hoooo great idea if with your guy but dont expect us to be quiet and no giggles. We all know some couples young and old once they lie down cudlling now guess what happens next.Yeah use your imagination guys lol.
Yes I would fly cuddle class if there is a willing female to share the two and a half seats with me when I fly to London sometime in the next six months? unless of course i can just pay half the cuddle class price and have a lay down sleep. So what about the single male traveller Air New Zealand, have you a deal for me?
