Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe has confirmed his resignation, saying this year will be his last at the helm of the national carrier.
Airline chairman John Palmer says the company will miss Fyfe, who had ensured Air New Zealand remained profitable despite the backdrop of turbulent economic times that saw airlines lose billions globally.

“When appointed to the role of Chief Executive Officer, Rob gave a commitment to the Board that he would remain until 2012. The Board respects that as a world class Chief Executive Officer Rob wants to continue to challenge himself and explore new opportunities,” Palmer says.
Palmer says he is expecting significant international interest in the role as well as some strong candidates from within Air New Zealand’s existing executive management team.
The decision on the applicant that takes over the reins in 2013 could take up to six months.
Fyfe said he will leave a strong team behind him to direct the future of the airline.
“I want to leave Air New Zealand with the confidence that we have the pathway to sustainable strong growth to support the New Zealand economy.”
He says the company’s success had been because of his team’s confidence to run against the norm and move quickly to make key decisions.
“It’s that spirit and attitude that will come to the fore again this year."
